It Can Be Done, but should it?
When it’s time to replace your home’s roof, you may be curious if your able to take on this project yourself. Afterall, you can find DIY tutorials online for just about every project – from how to replace your gutters to how to install a shingle roof system. Why not handle it yourself and save a lot of money?
The Real Question You Need to Ask Yourself Is:
As working as a licensed roofing professional for over 13 years, I have never recommended a homeowner get on their own roof, much less try to repair, or replace it. As a roofing professional I’ve seen firsthand major injuries and sadly even a few deaths due to common mistakes. If you don’t know what you are doing you can do much more damage to your home and possibly yourself.
There are numerous hazards to contend with, including heights, tripping hazards, ladders, the weather, and power tools. Experienced roofers have the experience, tools, and equipment they need to work safely. If you’ve watched roofing DIY tutorials on YouTube, keep in mind that these usually feature pros who are giving tips for basic repair work and simple patching jobs. Roofing contractors have the experience of doing a job repeatedly. Chances are, as a homeowner, you’ve never replaced a roof. A home roofing expert will have done it hundreds, if not thousands, of times. Furthermore, your roof might be so dangerous that it has become unsafe. If you suspect that your roof is unsafe in anyway, you should absolutely stay off it. A damaged roof can collapse, causing serious damage inside the home-and serious injuries to anyone walking on it. Don’t take chances with your safety. Call a roofing expert to perform a professional inspection.
